on which Seven Wonder list you read). They include three
Old Kingdom burial structures and the Sphinx, built by the
4th dynasty pharaohs Khufu (also spelled Cheops
by the Greeks), Khafre (spelled Chephren), and Menkare (spelled
Mycerinus) between 2613-2494 BC.
- Continue to Memphis (First
Capital of Egypt), capital of the pharaohs during the Old
Kingdom. Visit the recumbent statue of Ramesses II and the
80-ton alabaster sphinx. Lunch en route. Continue to Sakara
to see the prototype of the Pyramids the Step Pyramid, built
for the 3rd Dynasty pharaoh Djoser by the exalted
architect Imhotep. Continue to Memphis,Ý Memphis was the
ancient capital of the first nome
of Lower
Egypt, and of the Old
Kingdom of Egypt
from its foundation until around 1300
BC. Its Ancient
Egyptian name was Ineb Hedj (ìThe White Wallsî). The
name ìMemphisî is the Greek deformation of the Egyptian
name of Pepi
Iís (6th
dynasty) pyramid,
Men-nefer, which became Menfe in Coptic.
The modern cities and towns of Mit
Rahina, Dahshur,
Saqqara,
Abusir,
Abu
Gorab, and Zawyet
elíAryan, south of Cairo,
all lie within the administrative borders of historical
Memphis (29ƒ50?58.8?N,
31ƒ15?15.4?E). Memphis was also known in Ancient
Egypt as Ankh Tawy ("That which binds the Two Lands"),
thus stressing the strategic position of the city between
Upper
and Lower
Egypt.
